MUSE/IQUE will present “The UnAmericans,” a multimedia performance examining the cultural and political impact of the Hollywood Blacklist, on Wednesday, June 11 at The Huntington Library in San Marino. The performance spotlights internationally recognized artists like Lena Horne, Harry Belafonte, and Judy Holliday who faced censorship during the McCarthy era.

By revisiting this era, the performance underscores the enduring struggle for freedom of expression in the arts. The event draws parallels to contemporary issues of censorship, resonating with current debates on the role of artists in challenging oppressive systems.

Founded in 2011, MUSE/IQUE creates civic-minded performances that blend music and narrative. Under Artistic Director Rachael Worby, the nonprofit works to reframe musical experiences through inclusive performances that encourage dialogue about important issues.

Modern debates echo blacklist-era suppression, with artists still facing censorship based on politics or cultural backlash. Advocacy groups emphasize that art must remain a protected space for public discourse, making the themes particularly relevant today.

The Hollywood Blacklist began in the late 1940s, targeting artists suspected of communist ties. It deeply affected careers and lives, with many artists censured due to political activism or alleged affiliations.

The performance is designed to appeal to various audiences, including cultural history enthusiasts, arts patrons, civic-minded individuals focused on First Amendment rights, and educators drawn to cross-disciplinary themes.

The Huntington Library provides a fitting backdrop for this exploration, offering a space that bridges historical scholarship with cultural engagement. The collaboration between MUSE/IQUE and The Huntington adds institutional gravity to these themes.

Through narrative and music, the performance offers a unique perspective that invites audiences to reflect on the past while considering its relevance to present-day challenges.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, CA 91108. Tickets: www.muse-ique.com or (626) 844-7703.
