Quick Summary
The United States led this game from start to finish jumping out to a 8-0 lead and never looking back. Blacklock’s energy especially seemed to carry the team early, as she was attacking the rim at every opportunity. Finland came into this game second in the tournament in scoring at 94 points per game and first in opponent points scored a game at 42. Team USA won 77-62, beating both of those averages by a good margin.
While Finland used the three ball to go on a few runs, getting as close as four in the third quarter, USA punched back each time. It was the American’s pressure defense that really set the tone, even when the Finnish tried to stage a comeback USA | Tech buckled down defensively and pushed the lead right back out.
Jalynn Bristow had a great game once again leading all scorers with 20, hitting a number of clean mid-range shots and adding three from behind the arc. The front court overall in this was dominant for USA as Bristow, Malone and Gaston combined for 48 of the team’s 77 points. Love and Fritz were both steady again in the backcourt. Love showed off her finishing ability at the rim on a couple of tough and-ones while Fritz was an overall menace defensively notching three steals and two blocks to go along with her nine points on the offensive end.
Next Up: Semifinals vs Hungary
USA and Texas Tech will take on another undefeated team this time in the form of Hungary who beat Portugal in their quarterfinal matchup 77-51. Hungary is led by 6-4 center Zsuzsanna Sitku averaging 14.0 points per game in this tournament, followed by 5-10 shooting guard Réka Dombai with 13 points per game.
“This is the coolest opportunity ever,” said Blacklock. “We didn’t realize how big a deal it was until we got here but it’s just been awesome. It means everything that we get to represent the United States, Lubbock and Texas Tech. It doesn’t get better than this.”
