The Indonesian feature film Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan, which was filmed on location in Croatia, has become a huge success at the Indonesian box office.

In just ten days since its premiere on 10 July, more than 1.5 million viewers have watched the film in cinemas across the country.

Directed by Yandy Laurens, Sore tells the story of Jonathan, a photographer living in Croatia who is haunted by a painful childhood memory.

His life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Sore, a mysterious woman who claims to be his wife from the future. As the story unfolds, Jonathan is forced to confront unresolved issues from his past and grapple with questions of love, loss and time.

The film leaves viewers wondering whether Sore is truly from the future or simply a figment of Jonathan’s imagination.

The film is based on Laurens’ 2017 web series of the same name.

Filming took place in the picturesque Istrian town of Grožnjan and in Zagreb. The project marks the first collaboration between Indonesia’s Cerita Films and Croatia’s Balduči Film, with support from the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC). The Croatian team was led by producers Spomenka Saraga, Zdenka Gold and Bobby B. Grubić.

The film initially opened in 263 cinemas, but strong demand quickly pushed that number to more than 750 screens across Indonesia. With over 1.5 million tickets already sold, the producers are hopeful the film will surpass the three million mark.

Grožnjan played a key role in the success of the project, hosting the cast and crew for nearly six weeks during production. The town’s unique charm and scenic beauty are prominently featured in the film.

There is strong interest in bringing Sore to local audiences, especially given the involvement of Croatian talent and the country’s starring role in the film.
