This Luxury Dominican Republic Resort Has Golf, Polo, and One of the Caribbean’s Best Spas

By: Karen Udler - July 21, 2025 - 12:06 pm

It begins with a swing. Not the soft arc of a golf club — that comes later — but the wild, thundering rhythm of a mallet meeting ball. The kind of swing you feel in your chest, on a field carved out of sun and grass and horses. This is not your typical Caribbean retreat. This is Casa de Campo.

Set on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, Casa de Campo is the country’s premier luxury resort, but it’s more than that — it’s a private world built for those who crave adventure without sacrificing comfort. Spanning 7,000 acres, it’s a place where you can rise with the sun and ride a thoroughbred before breakfast, take aim at a clay pigeon by midday, and close out the day at a waterfront bar with a view of million-dollar yachts and a glass of aged Dominican rum.

But what strikes me every time I stay at this resort is the sheer diversity of it all — you can come here a dozen times and not try everything. That’s a rare quality in a resort.

A Playground for the Adventurous

At Casa de Campo, you don’t just play — you train, you ride, you compete. The resort’s Racquet Center is a world-class facility with both tennis and pickleball courts, offering expert instruction and pro-level surfaces for daily matches under the Caribbean sun.

Then there’s the Shooting Center — 245 acres of terrain designed for skeet, trap, and sporting clays. It’s one of the most sophisticated in the Caribbean, and it draws seasoned shooters and curious first-timers alike. The thrill isn’t just in the precision; it’s in the place — the wind in the palms, the crack of a perfect shot echoing through the hills.

And for equestrian lovers? Casa de Campo is unmatched. Its Polo & Equestrian Center is home to international-level matches, private stables, and lessons for riders of all levels. Whether you’re galloping across the field or taking a quiet trail ride at sunset, it’s pure exhilaration on horseback.

Golf Legends and Ocean Views

No story about Casa de Campo is complete without golf — and no golf course in the Caribbean is as iconic as Teeth of the Dog. Designed by Pete Dye and carved into the coral coastline, it’s consistently ranked among the best in the world. Every hole tells its own story, and several are perched right on the edge of the sea. Teeth of the Dog is currently in the midst of a major reinvigoration project, and will be reopening later this year.

But Teeth of the Dog is just the beginning. The resort is also home to two other championship courses — the 27-hole Dye Fore and The Links — each with its own distinct topography and challenge. Whether you’re a scratch golfer or a casual player, this is bucket-list territory.

Beyond the Green and the Saddle

Adventure doesn’t stop with sport. Casa de Campo’s Marina is a destination in itself — an endlessly charming, Mediterranean-inspired village with its own Yacht Club, boutiques, galleries, and views of luxury vessels bobbing in the breeze. You can charter a boat, sail into the Caribbean, or simply sip an espresso and watch the day go by.

And when it’s time to refuel? The resort has more restaurants than you can count — from modern Mediterranean to Dominican fine dining — along with bars and food trucks. It’s a culinary journey that spans the globe, but with local flavors always in focus.

And that brings us to the wellness center. The Spa at Casa de Campo offers a different kind of adventure — one of deep, quiet restoration. With signature treatments, hydrotherapy, and holistic wellness rituals, it’s the exhale at the end of an extraordinary day. It’s one of the best spas I’ve ever been to in the Caribbean – and easily one of the most beautiful, just steps from the property’s resort-within-a-resort, the Premier Club.

Don’t Miss the Casa de Campo Food & Wine Festival

Each October, Casa de Campo becomes a culinary paradise with its acclaimed Food & Wine Festival. The 3rd Annual Festival, set for October 10–11, 2025, brings together top international chefs—Michael Mina, Hubert Keller, Scott Conant—and local culinary star Chef Tita Páez for cooking demos, wine and spirit tastings, and signature dinners under the stars.

Where to Stay at Casa de Campo

Here’s another way this places gives you choices. You can stay in the main hotel, in the aforementioned Premier Club (which has seriously stunning rooms and is just steps from the spa) or in one of the scores of luxury villas scattered across the property. I’ve stayed in several villas, and it’s an experience that’s hard to beat — each is staffed, meaning you wake up to the smell of fresh coffee and the sound of an omelette being prepared, you have your own housekeeper, you get the point. It’s blissful.

How to Get to Casa de Campo

Casa de Campo is located in La Romana on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, just minutes from La Romana International Airport (LRM). The easiest way to get there? American Airlines offers direct flights from Miami to La Romana multiple times a week, putting you just over two hours away from one of the most luxurious adventure resorts in the Caribbean. Once you land, the resort is less than 10 minutes from the airport — you’ll be checked in and exploring in no time.
