Peru: Judiciary to present proposals to tackle organized crime in illegal mining

The Judiciary will present to the working group convened by the Executive —which seeks to promote formal mining— proposals related to the institution, such as measures to control forms of organized crime stemming from illegal mining.

This was reported by Supreme Judge and Chairman of the Transitory Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, Víctor Prado Saldarriaga, who attended the meeting on behalf of Judiciary Chairwoman Janet Tello Gilardi.
"The Judiciary will present its proposals focused on what concerns it: control over forms of organized and extractive crime, the increasingly complex risks of criminal governance, as well as the growing consistency of illegal economies stemming from illegal mining," he stated.
The judge noted that these issues concern the Judiciary, which is therefore committed to participating in this Executive Branch initiative, whose next meeting is scheduled for July 18 at 10:00 a.m. (local time).
In an interview with the Justicia TV team, the chairman of the Transitory Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court said that Monday's meeting was a preliminary gathering to address a highly complex issue.
"There is a very clear willingness among the institutions and other sectors involved to find ways of reaching agreements that will help overcome the various problems it entails," the magistrate underlined.
He noted that, during the meeting, he expressed the Judiciary's willingness to support this process as long as it falls within its constitutional and legal responsibilities.
The meeting was led by President Dina Boluarte. It was also attended by the heads of Congress, the Judiciary, the Ombudsman's Office, as well as representatives of the National Federation of Small-Scale and Artisanal Mining of Peru, and business leaders from the sector.
