Peru’s iconic Torito de Pucará gets a Thai twist as six artists—five Thai and one Peruvian—reinterpret the folk symbol to celebrate 60 years of Peru–Thailand diplomatic ties.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Embassy of Peru in Bangkok has launched Torito de Pucará: Peru and Thailand United by Art to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The cultural exhibition features six large sculptures inspired by the traditional Peruvian Torito de Pucará, a ceramic symbol of protection, prosperity, and identity. Created by five Thai artists and one Peruvian artist, each 1.5-meter piece showcases a personal interpretation of this Peruvian folk icon.

The exhibition opened on July 12 at ICONSIAM’s Thara Hall and will run there through July 16. Beginning July 20, the artworks will be displayed across six locations in Bangkok through November 5: Songwat (artist Chira Chirapravati Na Ayudhaya), Wat Pho (Diego Cornejo), MRT Phahon Yothin – Metro Art (Prof. Sukumarl Sarakasetrin), ICONSIAM (Nakrob Moonmanas), Siam Discovery (Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch), and One Bangkok (Somnuek Klangnok).

Participants are invited to visit all six sculptures, take a photo or video with each, and post them on social media in accordance with the project guidelines. Those who complete the whole tour will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win one of two round-trip tickets to Peru. Details and instructions are available on the embassy’s official social media pages.

The Torito de Pucará originated in southern Peru and has evolved from a ritual amulet into a widely recognized symbol of cultural pride and artistic tradition. The project introduces Thai audiences to its story through contemporary artistic collaboration, offering a shared space for appreciation and dialogue. Ambassador Cecilia Zunilda Galarreta Bazán has led the embassy’s efforts in organizing the exhibition, with strong local support from Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
