Lewis Miley summer plan and Newcastle United transfer stance after injury blow

Newcastle United talent Lewis Miley has hit been hit with another injury setback

Newcastle United will take no risks with Lewis Miley this summer after the midfielder pulled out of the Under-19 European Championships with England. The Football Association confirmed the news earlier this week, with the Magpies talent leaving the camp, along with Southampton ace Tyler Dibling.

For Miley it is a frustrating hammer blow after a season of limited game time in black and white. The tournament was set to hand the Newcastle teen much-needed minutes, as well as the chance to further impress at international level.

Instead, Miley will now enjoy a period of rest and recuperation before Newcastle's players return to the club's Benton base in early July. Eddie Howe's squad will begin their pre-season prep later that month with UK friendlies, before jetting off to tour Asia.

Meanwhile, transfer interest has been registered with the academy prospect as clubs eye a potential future superstar following his lack of first-team minutes of late. A number of Premier League sides have Miley on their shortlist but will face a tough response from Newcastle as Howe seeks to keep the player beyond the summer and long into the future.

“Lewis is absolutely pivotal to our future here,” said Howe earlier this year. “From my perspective, he’s going absolutely nowhere.

"We want to build the team with him in it, for many, many years, that’s my thought process.”

Giving Miley regular first-team opportunities will be crucial to his development and happiness at St James' Park as he begins a period of recovery from his latest setback.
