The Ukrainian U21 national football team has completed its preparation for the 2025 European Championship by securing an important 1-0 victory over Spain in their final friendly match.
Under the guidance of Unai Melgosa, the Ukrainian team is actively preparing for the Euro 2025 U21 tournament, which will take place in Slovakia. As part of their preparation, the team held a training camp in Spain, where they played two friendly matches. The first ended with a 4-0 win against Murcia U21.
In the final preparation match, the “blue and yellows” faced the Spanish U21 team, the current runners-up of Europe.
The first dangerous moment of the game came near the end of the first half when Nazar Voloshyn tried to score, but the Spanish goalkeeper managed to save his shot, turning the ball out for a corner.
After the break, Spanish player Raúl Moro took a free kick, but Heorhiy Yermakov once again showed his skills by deflecting the ball for a corner.
In the 78th minute, Taras Mykhavko had a chance to score with a header following a corner kick, but the ball flew past the goal.
The decisive goal of the match was scored in the 90+2 minute: after a cross from the flank by Bohdan Viunnyk, winger Illia Kvasnytsia headed the ball into the opponent’s net.
Thus, the friendly match ended with the score Spain U21 – Ukraine U21 0:1.
This victory was historic for the Ukrainian U21 team, as it was the first time they defeated Spain. Previously, the teams had met five times in official matches, with the “blue and yellows” suffering five defeats.
This will be the Ukrainian U21 team’s second consecutive appearance at the European Championship. In 2023, the team achieved one of its best results ever by reaching the semifinals, which also secured their first-ever qualification for the Olympic Games.
