According to the sheriff's office, at 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, deputies and officers with the Hickory Police Department responded to a report of multiple persons shot at a residence on Walnut Acres Drive. That residence is located in the Mountain View community of Southwest Catawba County.

Investigators said as many as 100 people were attending a house party at a home on the street when one or more people discharged firearms, WSOC-TV reported. Eyewitnesses told local reporters that many people attending the party were from nearby high schools, and people began scattering, ducking for cover and running toward safety when shots erupted.

As of Sunday morning, the sheriff's office Facebook post said that 12 victims had been reported. One of the victims is dead and another is in critical condition.

The sheriff's office said that several others remain hospitalized.

The sheriff's office, Hickory Police Department and Special Agents with the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation were all at the scene of the incident working to establish a motive and identify those responsible.
