The lychee season in India has gotten started, and harvesting is picking up speed, says Manasvi Khandelia, sales planner for Indian fresh produce company Superplum: "The lychee harvest has begun, and we're distributing fresh lychees sourced from orchards in Bihar and West Bengal, regions known for their lychee cultivation. The fruits are harvested when ripe, cleaned, and packed at processing facilities located near the farms. They are transported in refrigerated trucks to South and West India to help maintain quality and shelf life without using harmful chemicals or sulphites."

Superplum has made it its mission to make sure that the lychees are available across India, instead of just near the production areas, Khandelia explains. "Access to fresh lychees has historically been limited to areas near production regions, with high spoilage rates during long-distance transport. It is estimated that over 40% of India's lychee harvest is lost each year due to supply chain challenges. We tackle this challenge with the use of a cold chain distribution system aimed at reducing spoilage and improving access in non-growing regions." The company's process management and modern supply chain enable it to ship large quantities to cities like Bangalore and Chennai, where supply has traditionally been limited to air transport. This also enables better realizations for hundreds of farmers in key Lychee growing regions across the east and the North of the country.

According to Khandelia, the packaging for lychees can also be scanned by consumers to have full traceability: "Each pack includes a QR code that allows consumers to trace the lychees back to the farm of origin. Lychees are currently available on platforms including Swiggy Instamart, Amazon Fresh, Flipkart, and at retail outlets such as Lulu and Metro. The lychee season is back!"
