Putin pans on taking trip to China for WWII victory in Asia celebrations

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit China in September to participate in events marking the 80th anniversary of the country’s victory over Imperial Japan in World War II, according to Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu. The announcement was made during Shoigu’s meeting in Moscow with Chen Wenqing, head of China’s Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, who is attending an international security forum with representatives from over 100 countries.

Shoigu stated that Putin's trip would be a reciprocal visit following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Russia. China commemorates the end of WWII in Asia annually on September 3, the date of Japan’s surrender in 1945.

Earlier this month, President Xi was in Moscow for Russia’s May 9 Victory Day celebrations, honoring the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany. During the visit, Putin and Xi reaffirmed their nations' dedication to preserving historical memory and honoring the wartime sacrifices of their people.

Putin highlighted the massive human cost of the conflict, noting that the Soviet Union lost 27 million lives and China 37 million in their respective fights for freedom and independence. He emphasized that these sacrifices must always be remembered.

The two leaders also held comprehensive discussions, signed several cooperation agreements, and released a joint statement on global strategic stability. China’s Foreign Ministry hailed Xi’s Moscow trip as “a complete success."
