A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Chile’s northern Tarapacá region on Sunday, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The seismic event occurred at a depth of 103 kilometres (approximately 64 miles) beneath the earth’s surface, the EMSC reported.
As of now, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage. Local authorities are monitoring the situation, and assessments are ongoing.
Chile, located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, is no stranger to earthquakes. The country has some of the world’s most rigorous building codes and emergency response protocols, developed over years of experience with frequent seismic activity.
Residents are advised to remain alert and follow any instructions issued by emergency services.
