BBC iPlayer viewers are only just discovering a dark comedy from the 2000s that "wouldn't be made today". Nighty Night, which was first released in 2004, focuses on narcissistic sociopath Jill Tyrell (Julia Davis) joining a dating agency after her husband Terry (Kevin Eldon) was diagnosed with cancer.

Jill believes Terry will die soon and lies to men that she is a widow. She also grows obsessed with her new neighbour, Don (Angus Deayton), and tries to take his family home.

The dark and twisted comedy ran for two series and included a number of comedy stars including Gavin and Stacey's Ruth Jones, The Thick of It's Rebecca Front, The League of Gentlemen icon Mark Gatiss, Alan Partridge star Felicity Montagu and Miranda Hart.

TV comedy fans have taken to Reddit to share their love of Nighty Night and recommended the show to other users.

Nighty Night Jill looks into camera
Nighty Night centres on the character of Jill, a woman obsessed with her neighbour, a handsome doctor who lives with his wheelchair bound wife across the road. Jill claims her hospitalised husband is dying of a terminal illness and so descends on the life of the unfortunate couple.

One viewer said: "I'd love to go off on one about how the first series is the best single comedy drama ever made of anyone is interested.."

Aother viewer said: "Love it, just done a re-watch too! The BBC definitely wouldn't be able to make this comedy these days."

One fan said: "Nighty Night is literally my favourite TV show ever and I am so jealous of people discovering it for the first time. Julia Davis is my hero, and if you like Nighty Night, you must check out her other twisted works, especially Human Remains, Hunderby and Sally4Ever."

A fourth viewer commented: "The first series is sublime. Second series was definitely a big leap towards the bizarre and ridiculous but still had its moments."

Ruth Jones Jill
Ruth Jones appeared in Nighty Night before writing Gavin and Stacey.

Nighty Night had some twisted moments, including Jill locking her husband in their spare room, death by Angel Delight and Jill attempting to break up a marriage.

Nighty Night was temporarily removed from BBC iPlayer earlier this year but was reinstated following an issue with licensing rights.

Nighty Night can be streamed on BBC iPlayer online.
