ABATE trauma and accident classes come weeks after 2 fatal motorcycle accidents

In less than 48 hours, the QC had two fatal motorcycle accidents from March 18-20.

These accidents came just two weeks before ABATE of Iowa Dist. 15, a local non-profit advocacy group, plans to hold their annual two wheel trauma course (April 7 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Genesis Heart Institute in Davenport).

This course aims to teach those first on scene to better handle these unique type of accidents and increase the survival rate of riders involved.

This year the group is also holding an accident management course, specifically for riders, on the same week (April 6 from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus Heart Institute).

According to ABATE of Iowa, over 52 percent of all motorcycle crashes will result in serious injury or fatality. The advocacy group also said these types of accidents are different from those involving cars.

"Motorcyclists don't have a cage around them like you do in a car," said District Coordinator DJ Jepsen. "So, we are exposed to the elements, and when we go down it's usually pavement."
