Maryville High School 12th-grader Leah Montgomery won the award for best photography in the East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition.

A total of 349 works of art by East Tennessee students are shown through Jan. 14 at the Knoxville Museum of Art, 1050 Worlds Fair Park Drive.

The 12th annual East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition opened Nov. 24 at the museum.

The display is presented by the museum along with the Tennessee Art Education Association. The competition is offered to East Tennessee middle and high school students and gives them an opportunity to participate in a juried exhibition, to show their talents and to be honored for their accomplishments. A reception and awards ceremony is 6-8 p.m. Dec. 5.

Sixth-graders through 12th-graders living in 32 East Tennessee counties and who attend public, private or home schools are eligible to submit art for the exhibit. Fewer than a third — 349 — of the more than 1,073 entries were selected for the museum show. The art includes paintings, computer graphics, photography and mixed media.

Baylor School 12th-grader Zheng Wu's art won best in show in the East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition.

Since 2005, the East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition has shown the art work of almost 4,000 students. Those students have competed for a total of $7 million in scholarships from colleges and universities from around the nation.

The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1-5 p.m Sunday. Admission is free.
