This September 17-18, 2016 on Margarita Island, Venezuela will host the 17-th Non-Aligned Movement Summit (NAM). 120 member countries will participate, and among them will be Serbia, an observer member.
According to the official notification of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Serbia (September 13, 2016) at the forefront of the Serbian delegation will be First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic. Dacic declared that at the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Margarita Island in Venezuela among others he will debate about Kosovo as a key objective and priority for Serbia to be counter pressure and lobbying in disfavor of Kosovo’s independence. The world doesn’t need the passive and anti-western Non-Aligned Movement!
First of all, question is: What does this mean for the Non-Aligned Movement as a peaceful organization, for international justice, order, security, democracy and peace?
Why is Serbia misusing international organizations such as the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement(NAM), European Union (EU), Organization for Security and Cooperation of Europe (OSCE) to contest and deny Kosovo’s independence and sovereignty which till now has been recognized by the 112 United Nations member countries?
Has the Non-Aligned Movement ever heard that Serbia is a Triple Aggressor (1990-1999)? As such, it has no legal right to be neither a member nor Observer of the Non-Aligned Movement because it is contrary to the principles of the declared doctrine of the Organization. The organization says : “Member states have a common set of principles in preserving national independence, do not join any imperial power bloc, reject the establishment of foreign military bases, defend the right of peoples to self-determination, and fight for general and complete disarmament and peace.”
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) should cut Serbia’s observer status, and exclude them from its body because of its negative role in international relations This is especially so in Balkans interstate relations after Tito’s death on May 4, 1980. That was the time Serbia started to break up the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Serbia was an aggressive and centrifugal power in destroying multiethnic, multicultural, pluralist and diverse peaceful Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. That testified to Serbia’s three aggressive and genocidal wars against Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo (1990-1999).
This is the main valid reason (de facto and de jure) why Serbia doesn’t have the moral and legal right to be a permanent member nor to hold observer status in the Non-Aligned Movement as a peaceful international organization.
The justice, rules, norms and principles of international law, which are in favor of protecting international legal order, peace, security and democratic values and the civilized international community.
What kind of creation and preserving of peace and world security can the Non-Aligned Movement claim? After the end of the Cold War, it contributed nothing to resolve any international disputes, particularly in the Balkans when Serbia started three aggressive wars and genocides against Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo (1990-1999).
Where was the Non-Aligned Movement as a peaceful organization when Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo needed help to survive Serbia’s genocides and unjust wars?
After the end of the Cold War between the two superpowers ( The United States and the Soviet Union) in 1990 there was no need for political moderation between them, because the Soviet Union collapsed as a superpower. The bipolar system of international political relations ended.
In 1989, the Berlin Wall was removed by the Eastern and Western Germans. It was as a result of the historic Agreement between U.S. President Ronald Regan and the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavik of Iceland. That was on Sunday, Oct. 12, 1986, and it closed that chapter of the Cold War (1948-1989) between USA and USSR.
Serbia wasn’t the founder of the Non-Aligned Movement (1961), but the President of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito (1945 – 1990) was an initiator.
It should be recalled that “under Tito’s leadership, Yugoslavia became a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement. In 1961, Tito co-founded the movement with Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser, India’s Jawaharlal Nehru, Indonesia’s Sukarno and Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah, in an action called The Initiative of Five (Tito, Nehru, Nasser, Sukarno, Nkrumah). They established strong ties with third world countries. This move did much to improve Yugoslavia’s diplomatic position. On 1 September 1961, Josip Broz Tito became the first Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement.”
Serbia, as a successor to Tito’s Yugoslavia has nothing to do with the Non-Aligned Movement because its unjustified aggressions and wars against Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo (1990-1999) destroyed the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1945-1990). Serbia did that to re-expand borders of Greater Serbia to the detriment of the territories of Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo.
That was the main reason why Serbia, headed by Slobodan Milosevic, the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts with its historical Memorandum of 1996, together with Serb mass media have been fighting to destroy Tito’s peaceful Yugoslavia (1945-1990) to restore Greater Serbia (Velika Srbija). Their sole purpose was to grab their indigenous territories, denying freedom, self-determination and independence of the Slovenes, Croats, Bosnian Muslims and Albanians in Kosovo.
