"One of the most authentic places in Southern Europe", foreign media echo the Albanian coast: A festival of landscapes and beaches

Albania, located between East and West, is one of the most authentic countries in Southern Europe, writes Juan Calleja in an article of the Spanish edition of "National Geographic". Located on the Balkan Peninsula, it borders Greece, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro, and its approximately three million inhabitants live in a territory similar in size to the region of Galicia.

Its coast is a festival of landscapes and beaches. Albania lived for more than four decades under a strict communist regime that kept the country isolated from the world until 1991.

Despite being a parliamentary republic for 30 years and developing a gradual opening to the outside world - since 2014 Albania has received the status of a candidate country to join the European Union.

It maintains a wild nature and remains a destination that has not yet been affected by the overpopulation of foreign tourists. The Albanian Riviera, a small piece of serendipity in the southwest of the country that perfectly combines beaches and unique sunsets and – also – unbeatable prices.

Sarande

The ferry trip from the island of Corfu (Greece) to the city of Saranda takes about an hour and a half, enabling travelers to get to know the transparent blue waters of the Ionian Sea, which will accompany them during this trip.

Before reaching the port of Saranda you will see a steep coast with high mountains and several coves. Upon disembarking at the small port, tourists will see a view similar to that of Spanish coastal destinations such as Benidorm, with countless buildings climbing up the hillside.

The coastal city has a lively promenade - especially at night - and a beautiful urban beach, which, like most of those on the Albanian Riviera, is pebbly and offers a view of the sea with crystal clear waters.

In addition to being the gateway to South Albania, Saranda is a good strategic point to sleep a few nights and visit tourist destinations such as Butrinti or Ksamili and rent a car to enjoy the trip to the coast.

BUTRINTI THROUGH HISTORY

The twenty kilometers of road that separate Saranda from Butrint National Park can be covered in 40 minutes. As you descend towards the archeological site of Butrint, located on a sort of island washed by the Ionian Sea, the views are spectacular. The landscape consists of a series of small towns and grasslands, where it is common to see numerous waterfowl, grazing cows or wild horses.

Për të hyrë në Butrint, që ndodhet në bregun tjetër, duhet të hipni në një platformë druri lundruese, e cila lëviz përmes një sistemi rrotullues rudimentar. Më parë, ju mund të vizitoni kështjellën veneciane në formën e një fortese trekëndore, e cila u ndërtua në shekullin e XV për të mbrojtur qytetin e vogël. Me një sipërfaqe prej më shumë se 200 hektarësh, parku arkeologjik ruan mbetje nga e kaluara greke, romake, bizantine, veneciane dhe osmane.

Rrënojat më të vjetra datojnë në epokën e bronzit, por qyteti si vendbanim i përhershëm u ndërtua nga grekët në shekullin e VIII para Krishtit. Ky muze mbresëlënës në ajër të hapur u zbulua në vitin 1920 nga arkeologët italianë dhe që nga viti 1992 është një vend i Trashëgimisë Botërore të UNESCO-s.

KSAMILI, I NGJASHËM ME KARAIBET

Dhjetë minuta me makinë nga Butrinti, duke ndjekur rrugën SH81 pa kaluar sërish në bregun tjetër, arrini në Ksamil, një qytet i ndërtuar në vitet gjashtëdhjetë në një vijë të vogël bregdetare që përballet me tre ishuj që mund të arrihen edhe duke notuar.

Kjo pjesë e bregdetit ku ndodhet Ksamili, e cila aksesohet edhe nga Saranda – është destinacioni më i pëlqyer i plazhit mes shqiptarëve dhe turistëve të huaj, të tërhequr nga ujërat e kaltër kristal të ngjashme me atë të detit të Karaibeve.

Plazhet e saj janë me rërë të bardhë, ndryshe nga pjesa më e madhe e bregdetit të Jonit të Shqipërisë, dhe ofrojnë perëndime unike të diellit.

BORSHI: GJASHTË KILOMETRA PLAZH TË EGËR

Për të shijuar Rivierën Shqiptare në të gjithë shkëlqimin e saj duhet të udhëtoni drejt Borshit, pak më shumë se një orë me makinë nga Saranda. Nëse arrini në këtë qytet gjatë mbrëmjes, do të magjepseni nga perëndimi i diellit.

Kjo rrugë ka një shtrirje prej më shumë se 100 kilometra përgjatë bregut të Jonit midis shkëmbinjve, maleve të larta dhe pamjeve të pabesueshme të detit blu deri në portin e Parkut Kombëtar të Llogarasë, një pikë gjeografike që shënon ndarjen me bregdetin e Adriatikut.

Plazhi i Borshit është më i gjati në të gjithë Rivierën, me gjatësi prej gjashtë kilometrash. Është me guralecë dhe nuk është e nevojshme të marrësh me qira një shezlong dhe një çadër siç ndodh në pjesë të tjera të bregdetit.

Plazhi mbetet ideal për të kaluar një ose dy ditë në plazh, pa zhurmën e natës, hoteleve dhe ndërtesave në qytete të tjera.

Plazhi i Borshit ka një shëtitore ku ndodhen disa restorante ngjitur me plazhin dhe që shërbejnë ushqime tradicionale të zonës si, oktapod i pjekur në skarë, midhje, kallamar apo makarona me (frutti di mare) – ndikimi italian është shumë i pranishëm edhe në gastronominë shqiptare.

PORTO PALERMO 

Duke vazhduar në veri, rruga ju lejon të lini makinën në disa këndvështrime për të soditur bregdetin nga lart. Pamjet janë mahnitëse. Pak më tutje mund të shihni disa bunkerë betoni të vendosur në pjesën e shpatit të malit me pamje nga deti.

The communist dictator who ruled Albania's destiny for 40 years, Enver Hoxha, ordered the construction of nearly 175,000 bunkers throughout the territory for fear of a foreign attack or invasion.

Only a few minutes away is the bay of Porto Palermo. On an island joined to the coast by a narrow strip of land, there is the castle of Ali Pasha, a governor of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans, who had great power in this area during the 19th century.

This castle, whose origins are attributed to the Venetians, can be visited during the day. Also, the underground area, which at the time of the Italian occupation served as a prison, and the upper outer part where the towers are, stand out, offering a stunning view of the entire bay.

GIPESA BEACH

Just a few kilometers from Porto Palermo towards the city of Dhërmi, which is about 40 minutes away, you can see a submarine bunker on the lower slope of one of the mountains. It was built during the government of Enver Hoxha and is not easy to access from the road because it is in a military zone with limited access.

Dhërmiu is also a point of interest for many tourists which offers a stunning beach, one of the jewels in the crown of the Albanian Riviera is the beach of Gjipe. At Gjipe Beach you can breathe and enjoy the peace in a wild natural environment. There are several beach bars and some tourists pitch tents to sleep and enjoy the beautiful sunsets and sunrises.
