Kyrgyz state bodies discuss implementation of UNSC resolution on non-proliferation of WMD

Bishkek, Sept.12, 2019. /Kabar/. A three-day National Round Table on the implementation and updating of the Action Plan of Kyrgyzstan on the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution 1540 for 2017-2019 was held in Bulan-Soguttu village, Issyk-Kul Oblast.

The event is conducted by Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Economy with the constant support of the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek.

According to the Economy’s Ministry press service, representatives of ministries and agencies, involved in the implementation of the National Round Table, the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek and OSCE experts participated in the event.

The purpose of the Round Table is to discuss achievements and challenges in the implementation of the National Action Plan of the Kyrgyz Republic on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1540 for 2017-2019, as well as issues related to its updating.

The development and adoption of such a Plan of the Kyrgyz Republic testifies to the country's commitment to international obligations in the field of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and its contribution to strengthening international security.

As part of the implementation of the National Action Plans for the implementation of UNSC 1540, Kyrgyzstan has acceded to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and the Geneva Protocol for the Prohibition of the Use in War of Asphyxiating, Poisonous or Other Gases and Bacteriological Methods of Warfare, signed on 17 June 1925 in Geneva.

The Resolution 1540 is a legally binding document of the UN Security Council, aimed at preventing terrorists from acquiring nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and materials, as well as their means of delivery.

Kyrgyzstan has ratified the main international treaties in the area of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and is taking consistent measures to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1540.
